Community Finance Team

Community Finance’s commitment to impact is clear. In 2023, the team originated $2.3 billion in debt and Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) equity investments that financed more than 14,000 affordable housing units. Since its inception, Capital One has invested almost $17 billion in affordable housing and provided financing for more than 160,000 affordable housing units. 

Capital One’s Community Finance originates debt and equity to support affordable housing development. The team provides construction debt financing, as well as, invest in low income housing credits through proprietary and multifund equity fund structures. In addition the team partners with other lines of business to provide capital to Community Development Financial Institutions. 

The Community Finance is a line of business that seeks to build inclusive, thriving, resident-centered communities that catalyze opportunity & well being; and enables Capital One to further on its quest to change banking for good. We partner with other teams within External Affairs and lines of business to create meaningful impact for customers and communities sustainably and at scale. 

While individual roles may differ, general responsibilities at this level will likely include:

  • Understand and employ all lending, investing and regulatory/compliance policies and procedures of the bank and the department.

  • A solid understanding of loan and equity risk factors is essential. 

  • Responsible for using analytical skills to help make informed decisions.

  • Review and verify information about potential borrowers and related parties and provide key takeaways to business units.

  • Preliminary financial analysis and modeling of multifamily LIHTC transactions. 

  • Recommends structural changes and/or enhancements related to affordable housing transactions.

  • Act as a gatekeeper to identify and mitigate risks.

  • Assists in pipeline management and maintaining reporting needs. 

  • Manage workflow and influence task completion across various teams; fostering collaboration.

  • Assist in building and refining key data resources, ensuring accuracy and accessibility across the organization.

  • Research industry-specific information from various sources, including direct conversations with borrower, syndicator and industry publications. 

  • Stay current on industry trends and maintain market awareness in targeted markets through direct research and review of third-party research.

  • Identify and implement enhancements to current processes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  • Support the Team in all aspects of Community Finance transactions.

  • Assist or lead select ad hoc projects as requested by leadership.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or military experience.

  • At least 3 years of experience in commercial real estate, underwriting, and/or asset management in the field of affordable housing finance or commercial real estate.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master’s degree in Finance.

  • At least 3 years of specialized experience in Community Finance. 

  • Completion of credit training program (or equivalent work experience).

  • Strong oral and written communication, presentation and influencing skills with a high level of attention to detail.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York, NY: $139,100 - $158,700 for Agency UW & PM I

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
