Principal Risk Specialist - Crisis Management Strategy| Retail Bank

As a Principal Associate for Capital One Banking & Premium Products Crisis Management, you will leverage your customer focus, judgment and influencing skills to lead through active incidents and operational disruptions. As part of the team, you will translate our crisis framework into real world action, integrating decisive operational response with structured governance required to keep our business resilient and mitigate reputational risk. 

This role is designed for a disciplined professional who can navigate the complexities of well managed program requirements while meeting the high bar of second and third line partners in a matrixed organization. You will act as a thought partner and trusted advisor, applying analytical skills and rigorous scenario analysis to strengthen our ability to detect, manage, and recover from incidents that impact our Banking and Premium Products customers and partners.  

This role requires schedule fungibility given the unknown nature of crisis activations and has an “on call” component. You may be a liaison for "off-peak" emergencies (before 9:00 AM, after 5:00 PM, and weekends), ensuring a seamless and rapid response to any situation requiring immediate intervention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Incident Leadership: Lead and support Banking & Premium Products Crisis Management responses to live incidents and events, ensuring clear communication and coordinated action across banking and premium product lines

  • Process Rigor & Governance: Create and maintain formal process documentation designed to withstand intense scrutiny from audit, internal challenge, and regulatory exams

  • Stakeholder Influence: Develop and leverage deep relationships across the Banking & Premium Products organization. You must be comfortable influencing up, providing clear guidance to senior leadership during high pressure scenarios.

  • Training & Exercises: Support the development and delivery of sophisticated crisis exercises and training programs that test and mature our Banking & Premium Products response capabilities

  • Automation & Efficiency: Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, reducing operational risk and increasing the speed of our response during Banking & Premium Products specific disruptions

  • Data-Driven Transparency: Use analytics and reporting to provide executive level visibility into Banking & Premium Products readiness and incident trends, driving informed decision making

  • Continuous Improvement: Act as a subject matter expert to identify and mitigate risks, turning "lessons learned" from events into permanent process enhancements within the Banking & Premium Products framework

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of experience in Crisis Management, Business Continuity, or a related risk discipline

  • At least 4 years of experience developing, documenting, and executing complex scenarios to test organizational readiness

  • At least 4 years of experience supporting internal stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Crisis Management or Operational Resilience within a large scale financial institution or Banking & Premium Products environment

  • 5+ years of experience supporting internal stakeholders and managing executive expectations

  • Experience in controls development, management, and regulatory reporting

  • Experience facilitating discussions and leading cross-functional teams through incident simulations or live events

  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a track record of managing multiple high priority projects simultaneously

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $120,800 - $137,900 for Principal Risk Specialist

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
