VP, Engineering - Enterprise Platform Tech

Capital One’s Technology senior leadership is looking for an experienced change leader as Vice President of Software Engineering within the Enterprise Platform Tech organization.  Enterprise Platform Tech focuses on shaping the developer experience, staying well-managed with our products and portfolios, and creating great experiences that enable associates to deliver on Capital One’s mission. The Enterprise Platform Tech team manages & builds tools, develops & maintains policy, and works with stakeholders at every level to identify areas of resistance at every point along the delivery life cycle.

As the VP, Engineering - Enterprise Platform Tech, you will build and lead teams focused on ensuring our tools and best practices help engineers quickly and safely develop and deploy high-quality software - and stay delighted in their work every day. You'll work closely with the users of your solutions, bringing a vision of modern DevOps and playing a critical role in designing and implementing best practices that will improve our resiliency and stability. You will assess current tools and frameworks ensuring the adoption of cutting-edge technology, not simply because it’s shiny and new, but because it’s the best overall solution. Your experience with leveraging emerging technology will help drive our future roadmap.

This executive leadership role has high visibility across the organization and requires strategic engagement with all technology leaders. This individual will have a high degree of influence and partner closely with our Divisional CIOs. Overall, this position is one of executive influence, impact, and transformation. It is also about recruitment, talent development, and engineering excellence. This role requires an extraordinary leader, capable of blending a bold vision with an uncanny ability to execute. They must win and sustain organizational support and be a great people leader that motivates and excites the team around their vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategic vision and mobilize the company on emerging AI areas such as coding agents, prioritizing high-leverage use cases, and in collaboration with key product and business stakeholders

  • Modernize secure path to production, making it significantly faster, easier and more secure, with reduced overall cost of ownership and improved product coherence 

  • Develop a strategic vision and mobilize the company on emerging continuous deployment areas such as Github Actions, prioritizing high-leverage use cases, and in collaboration with key product and business stakeholders  

  • Recruit and mentor a world-class team of engineers, who are inspired by our mission of changing banking for good and excited about new opportunities to create new experiences for our customers and associates 

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the company to identify business challenges and new opportunities, and work with Product partners to define project scope and deliverables

  • Represent Capital One at conferences, industry events and in media appearances, promoting our capabilities, helping us develop a strong external brand that will also help attract and retain world-class talent

  • Communicate with senior leaders and stakeholders on program updates, roadmap and vision, and help them reimagine their businesses

  • Collaborate with Risk, Compliance and other relevant organizations within the company to ensure that new [IDE plugins] systems and approaches are developed responsibly, aligned with our high standards, values and guidelines 

  • Attract, hire and retain key engineering talent, building a world-class organization

Location: McLean, VA, Richmond, VA, Plano, TX, or Remote (with regular travel)

  • The successful candidate will be a seasoned technology professional with a passion for innovation and a track record of transformation

  • The successful candidate will exhibit excellent leadership skills to leverage the capabilities of peers, business partners, and associates, and should possess the confidence and poise to influence the executive leadership team and various internal stakeholders

Experience / Skills:

  • Extensive software engineering Enterprise Platform Tech in forward-leaning technology organizations

  • Experience setting standards or rolling out tools that will be used by 1000s of developers

  • Proven track record of partnership with Cyber / Risk teams and managing through regulatory needs

  • Experience leading an engineering organization of 100+ 

  • Superior technical proficiency and well versed in modern approaches and tools that underpin the software development lifecycle, including CICD pipelines, testing, open source, public cloud infrastructure, DevOps

  • Great architectural acumen, with a focus on resiliency and a platform mindset

  • Proven experience driving/disrupting the business through technology innovation

  • Proven ability to continuously assess new technologies and make effective decisions in an 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • At least 8 years of people management experience

  • At least 15 years of engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree

  • At least 5 years of executive management experience in software engineering

  • At least 20 years of engineering experience

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $376,200 - $429,400 for VP, Software Engineering

San Francisco and San Jose, California (Hybrid On-Site): $398,500 - $454,900 for VP, Software Engineering

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
