Director, Leave and Accommodations

We are seeking a highly strategic leader to serve as Director, Leave and Accommodations. This critical role is responsible for driving transformation for the Leave and Accommodations team to help simplify the associate experience, remove abrasion and make it easier for the team. The successful candidate will drive process optimization, technology integration, harmonization with policy intent, and compliance excellence, ensuring a world-class, employee-centric experience while mitigating organizational risk.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Transformation

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year strategy to modernize and optimize the administration of all employee leave types (e.g., FMLA, state/local leaves, short-term disability, paid parental leave) and accommodation requests (ADA).

  • Lead the assessment and redesign of current Leave and Accommodations processes, leveraging industry best practices, automation, and shared services models to significantly improve efficiency, accuracy, and employee satisfaction.

  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new technology solutions (e.g., HRIS module optimization, third-party vendor systems) to streamline case management, tracking, and compliance reporting.

  • Manage the relationship and performance of any third-party administrators for leave management, ensuring service level agreements and performance metrics are met or exceeded.

Operational Excellence & Policy

  • Ensure all leave and accommodation policies and procedures are harmonized, clearly documented, communicated, and consistently applied.

  • Ensure rigorous internal controls and audit mechanisms to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including FMLA, ADA/ADAAA, and various state paid sick leave and parental leave laws.

  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics for the team (e.g., case turnaround time, resolution rates, compliance adherence) and implement continuous improvement initiatives based on data analysis.

  • Oversee complex or highly sensitive leave and accommodation cases, providing guidance and escalation support to the operational team.

Team Management & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the current Leave and Accommodations team, fostering a culture of high performance, compliance expertise, empathy, and service excellence.

  • Define organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities necessary to support and transform the function.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR Business Partners, Legal, Benefits, Payroll, and Safety teams to ensure seamless integration and communication.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience

  • At least 7 years in process, project management, or operations

  • At least 7 years of experience leading or managing a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of successfully leading major process or system transformations/implementations (e.g., implementing a new leave administration TPA or HRIS module) and overseeing teams through transformation

  • At least 5 years of using and interpreting data, identify trends, and translate insights into actionable transformation strategies and outcomes

  • Demonstrated ability to drive significant change while maintaining operational stability

  • A strategic mindset coupled with a hands-on, execution-oriented approach

  • Strong commitment to employee well-being and exceptional service delivery

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and effectively communicate complex policy information to employees

  • Experience using AI and/or technology to generate creative ideas, solve problems, troubleshoot common business problems, and translate them into tangible more efficient work products

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $190,300 - $217,200 for Director, HR

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
