Director, Project Management Office (Hybrid)

As Director of the Portfolio Management Office (PMO) team for Retail Bank’s Customer Protection Operations (CP) org you will lead a talented group of Program & Project Managers who help deliver on the strategic objectives of our organization. As part of both the CP Operations and Process & Project Office (C3PO) Leadership Teams, you will own leadership and management of the strategic programs, initiatives, and workstreams that comprise the core of the CP Portfolio. You will lead and influence multiple groups across the CP organization and be seen as a key change leader by our peers, business partners, and senior stakeholders. In this role, you will define strategy and provide business-critical reporting to senior leaders - ultimately shaping decisions that guide & grow Customer Protection as an organization.

The ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned strategic thinker and servant-leader with demonstrated success driving Key Results-connected work and program-level workstreams. Equally important, this candidate will lead, mentor, develop, and professionally care for the associates aligned to the Project job family in the CP Process & Project Office (C3PO) team. This leader will be a value-adding thought partner to their peers on the CP Leadership Team and the Retail Bank overall, collaborating with other senior leaders to identify gaps, get ahead of friction points, and continue maturing our ways of working. This candidate must have demonstrable skill in communicating at all levels of the organization and have a willingness to lead & mentor future leaders as we grow the next generation of program & project managers in Customer Protection.

 

We are looking for a leader who can…

 

Deliver Strategically

  • Provide overarching leadership and management of the strategic programs, initiatives, and workstreams that comprise the Strategic Objectives and Foundational Priorities of Customer Protection (as defined by the CP and Retail Bank Leadership)

  • Execute strategies for overall portfolio advancement including roadmapping, prioritization, risk analysis, and trade-off recommendations

  • Establish / approve each Program or Project’s scope, milestones, execution design, planning, launch criteria, and reporting structure in alignment with the Objectives, KRs, and KPIs of the organization

  • Ensure prompt and crisp tracking, communication, & reporting of the Portfolio, to include S2/3/4s, go/no-go events, pilots and go-lives, MBRs, and other key reporting structures

  •  related to the teams’ deliverables

  • Consult with business partners to understand complex problems and focus on bringing issues to resolution, escalate road-blocks as necessary to meet timelines, and clarify and define transformation requirements / scope for cross-functional problems 

  • Create and deliver presentations to senior stakeholders when needed to help guide and influence senior discussions and decisions

 

Organize Horizontally 

  • Organize and frame Project workstreams in a well-managed way that ensures the team supports CP’s objectives and delivery of key results

  • Partner closely with Line of Business and peer senior leaders to ensure the PMO team delivers on their workstreams (1) with operational excellence & timeliness (2) maintains focus on KR-driven & strategic requirements (3) maintains a strategic roadmap of initiatives so peers & partners are proactively engaged (4) reports on the state of the business clearly & concisely

  • Conduct independent research and analysis to solve ambiguous problems

  • Work with peer teams to develop recommendations to stakeholders enabling them to make key business decisions 

 

Lead With Excellence 

  • Accountable for the professional development and workplace welfare of the ACE team, ensuring the highest quality of mentorship for people leaders

  • Responsible for operational excellence and professionalism across the ACE team; participating in developing products and processes, benefits definition, management of changes in the operational environment, and assigning and managing team accountabilities on an ongoing basis  

  • Intimately understand the heart of operations and represent the voice of that operation to multiple product teams and client stakeholder groups 

  • Provide subject matter expertise on project management as needed and when representing the department in projects and other meetings

  • As needed, learn the nuances of the Customer Protection business to help drive high-impact transformations and predictable change management

Location: West Creek 5 (Richmond, VA) or Center 2 (McLean, VA) - this role is Hybrid, where you will be expected to spend 3 days per week working in office and the remainder of the week working virtually.

Basic Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience 

  • At least 6 years of People Management experience

  • At least 8 years of Program Management, Project Management, or Portfolio Management experience

  • At least 3 years of experience as Responsible or Accountable for reportable business metrics 

  • At least 3 years of Microsoft Office or Google Suite experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree

  • At least 8 years of People Management experience 

  • At least 10 years of Program Management, Project Management, or Portfolio Management experience

  • At least 5 years of experience focusing on improvements to customer experience

  • At least 3  years of experience as Owner / Accountable Executive for large-scale initiatives

  • CAPM, PMP, Lean, Agile, or SAFe certification

  • At least 5 years of Financial or Regulatory Industry experience

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $200,100 - $228,400 for Director, Project Management

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
