The Senior Director, Card Risk Events and Issues is responsible for driving Card Risk Events and Issues Strategy and transformation as part of our Card Risk Enhancement Program. Responsible for partnering across functional groups in shaping strategic plans, designing and implementing improvements, and developing world - class risk management practices that create a competitive advantage for Card.

 

Job Description

As a Senior Director leading the Card Risk Events and Issues team, you will apply your strategic and leadership skills to major company challenges. You will lead and team with world-class professionals to transform how we identify, manage and remediate and also prevent  instances of breakdowns that impact our customers.  And you'll do it all in a collaborative environment that values your insight, encourages you to take on new responsibility, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation.

 

The ideal candidate for this role will have strong experience in Risk Management or Consulting within the financial services industry, ideally with experience across the lines of defense.  Top notch problem solving, communication and analytical skills as well as the ability to drive decision-making with senior executives across the business and lines of defense will be critical to success. Additionally, this candidate will possess significant leadership experience, including leadership of direct teams, program delivery, change management, and influence/collaboration with multiple stakeholders across the organization. 

 

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic leadership: Develop and drive transformative initiatives that enable efficiency and value to our businesses, helping them avoid breakdowns that impact our customers and/or our ability to meet internal business objectives

  • Leadership:  Manage and develop a team of event managers, analysts, and project managers.  Able to lead a team through change to drive a culture of strong risk management. Coach and mentor associates throughout the organization with a goal of developing and retaining talent. 

  • Risk Management:  Drive transformation of how we manage our events and issues program, shifting left to prevention, faster identification and remediation

  • Teamwork:  Work closely with colleagues across Capital One including: Technology,  Operations, Risk Management, and Finance and others to drive improvement in quality, customer service, and profitability

  • Strategic & analytic orientation: A proven track record of decision making and problem solving based on analytics. Conceptual thinking skills must be complemented by a strong quantitative orientation

  • Strong business judgment, leadership and integrity: You are a tenacious decision maker, able to bring a healthy, aggressive, yet responsible approach to business

  • People leadership experience: Ability to build and leverage the capabilities of a high-performing team, as well as business partners across the enterprise. You  foster innovation, drive critical decisions, hold business partners accountable, and are able to consistently deliver results

  • Executive communication skills: Impeccable written and oral communication credentials, coupled with strategic influencing skills and the ability to drive agreement through intellect, interpersonal and negotiation skills

  • Clear results orientation: display an intense focus on achieving both short and long term goals. You are able to drive and execute an agenda in an uncertain and fluid environment

  • Successful track record of thriving in a fast paced, entrepreneurial and dynamic environment. Previous consulting experience is a plus

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military experience

  • At least 5 years of Risk Management, Financial Operations, Consulting or Business Analytics  experience

  • At least 7 years of experience  working in the financial services industry

  • At least 5 years of experience creating data driven communications for executive level audiences

  • At least 5 years of people leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Business Management, Accounting, or Economics, Operational familiarity with Commercial lending and Treasury products

  • At least 10 years of experience as a Risk Manager or Assurance within the financial services or tech industry

  • Proficiency with data analytics tools including (but not limited to) Excel and Tableau

  • At least 8 years of experience in people management

  • Proficiency with structuring slides and presentations in order to convey risk information

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $234,000 - $267,100 for Sr. Director, Risk Management

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
