Senior Manager - Risk Management (US CARD), Platform and Well Managed Operations

The Card Platforms and Well Managed team provides a strategically positioned defense, designed to strengthen the “well managed” muscle across Card Platforms and Services and fuel sustainable innovation by offering centralized support across multiple dimensions of risk mitigation activities. 

As a Senior Risk Manager in Capital One’s US Card Platform & Well Managed Operations Team you will apply your risk management, project management and analytical skills to our highest profile risk projects. You will collaborate across our Product, Tech and Operations teams responsible for working across the enterprise to develop and implement cutting edge risk solutions to ensure Capital One’s continued stability and success. Responsibilities:

Sr Leader support for the ACT Team; responsible for executing controls on behalf of the organizations we support. Currently the team supports 15 Key Business Processes and 180+ controls. The team is supported by onshore and offshore resources that facilitate the day to day execution of the work.  Insights are critical to the overall health of the process and must be gleaned constantly to drive a consistent feedback loop.  

  • Gather, interpret, and leverage data and insights gleaned from control execution monitoring to develop actionable steps/recommendations that will improve our risk profile and optimize business results

  • Develop, coordinate, and enhance processes, tools, templates, and job aides to support well-managed governance, reporting and analytics needs

  • Develop, contribute, edit, and/or deliver presentations that aid in the design, development, refinement, and usage of insights for proactive risk management methods

  • Ability to set strategic direction, manage expectations and lead cross-functional teams

  • Drive centralized management of the control execution monitoring with and in support of key internal stakeholders

  • Collaborate effectively across multiple levels and organizations (e.g., operations, risk management, enterprise management, etc.) to achieve objectives and support the organization in delivering on top priorities in a timely and efficient manner

  • Lead a team of domestic associates with dotted line reporting relationship to team of 30 offshore associates

  • Utilize data and strategic agenda to drive platform wide modernization efforts

  • Support strategic initiatives for new controls/products as they are developed, providing well managed viewpoint and requirements

What skills you need to bring to the table:

This role is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, who is capable of driving transformational change and delivering game-changing value. The preferred candidate will have experience working in Operations and Risk Management organizations within a major financial institution or servicing company, with a solid understanding of process management frameworks, risk and control methodology, control operating and design effectiveness testing, creation of data-driven insights, and drafting and telling compelling stories. 

Leadership: Influencing, challenging, and enabling associates and leaders to significantly evolve and lead through change. Drive complex projects and programs by providing strategic direction.

Tech & Product Fluency: The role does not require technical skills (e.g. coding) but you need to understand how to harness evolving technology to drive business outcomes. Further, you will be diving into problems with Product, Business Analysts, Operations, and Tech teams and the ability to speak their language is critical to collaboration and consensus building.

Curiosity: You have a curiosity to challenge the way things work and are capable of thinking outside of the box to develop and advocate for transformative solutions. 

Results Focus: You have a bias towards action, try things and sometimes fail. You work in scaled agile frameworks and believe in iterative delivery with a focus on results.

Communication: You can communicate and partner with your team and key stakeholders across all levels of the company to manage, inform, and influence outcomes. They know your priorities and why you are doing what you are doing.

Analytical: Ability to access and leverage data to build compelling stories of where the leverage is and what investments will deliver the best outcome for our customers and stakeholders. 


Customer-Centric: You lead with human centered design as the basis for decision making and influencing outcomes.

Basic Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least 5 years of experience working in risk management or financial services

  • At least 4 years of program management experience

  • At least 4 years of experience supporting, partnering and interacting with internal business clients

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree

  • 6+ years of Project Management experience leading cross functional projects and programs in Risk

  • 5+ years of program management experience leading cross functional risk programs

  • 6+ years of financial services risk management experience

  • 4+ years of Compliance, Legal, Audit, or first or second line Risk Management experience

  • 3+ years of experience in reporting and analyzing data

  • Certified Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM)

  • PMP, Lean, Agile or Six Sigma certification

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $170,800 - $194,900 for Sr. Risk Manager

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
